The hike is divided into three steep parts. The worst is in the beginning. It may seem difficult going up, but going down is much more worrisome as it is difficult on the knees and easy for one to slip and slide down the mountain. Good thing we had sturdy hiking books, decent balance, the chain built into the mountain, and I had a pair of cycling gloves to help with hanging onto the chains.
We started our ascent around 09:00. Each of us needed 1.5 liters of water, 2 lightly made sandwiches, and a handful of snacks. It was quite nice to eat our food with a view. If we had caught a grocery store before closing time the day before, we would have BBQed at the top; that would have been amazing! At least by not BBQing, we wouldn’t have to wait for our disposable BBQ to cool for us to handle it, put it in our bag, and bring it down the mountain to the rubbish bins.
The total time it took for us to get up and down the mountain was about 6 hours. We definitely stopped for at least a couple of long breaks and estimate that we hiked for a total of 5 hours. The weather was nice as the sun peeked out behind the clouds every now and then. The wind was mild and not a drop of rain hit us!
Lesson learned: Most people go up this hike to see and climb on top of Kjeragbolten and do not know that if one continues on the path towards the left (once walking away from Kjeragbolten) it will lead to the Lysefjord in 10-15 minutes!
